NEW BAKER "CURSED" SERIES - ANDREW REYNOLDS

Reynolds' and Dustin's graphics were the first I made, working on them at the same time. This one has a few twists to its tale. He originally started up with a cigarette but I soon got work that Andrew had quit so I dropped the smoke and fixed his puckered lip into a snarl. He also started life with eyes, but my undercoat ran into them and when I attempted to clean them they frosted over... it was at this point that I blacked his eyes out and put a fresh set of eyes into his hands, a nod to Pan's Labyrinth.

NEW BAKER "CURSED" SERIES - DON "NUGE" NGUYEN

Coming from a Vietnamese background, apparently Nuge eats Pho almost everyday. I eat it once a week, and have made it a bunch of times. The main difference this time was that instead of stock, I poured resin over the ingredients, then added the fresh herbs and bean sprouts on the day of the photo shoot.

I used to watch Blazing Saddles a lot when I was a kid, and after watching again recently hit upon the notion of doing him as a black cowboy.

This is from way back in issue 2 of The Skateboarder's Journal, accompanying a product spread. It originally showed the Greaser dad and his kids leaning on a rusty 1941 Willys done gasser style, with clothes and product photoshopped in over the top.

I have reconfigured the composition slightly for better display, and mounted the diorama on a wooded base.

It is pretty large at 640 x 580mm but that makes it kinda rad. The size is the reason I'm moving it on, and that's why it's cheap - I need the room to make more stuff like this...

The eyes sucked in the big doll, so I scanned and added the eyes from some I had in my bits and pieces box. The board is all scratch built too, no tech deck here.

I got the cover this issue! This is big, stands about 16" tall, the hairs alone took 7 hours. Everything was made from scratch, I welded the coping from 1.6mm steel plate, the microphone is adapted from a mini torch. The shoes are made from a pair of jeans inside out - I had the soles perfect but was running out of time so put them in the oven to dry and forgot about them, and they came out all beat up looking, saving me the time of ageing them! The jeans are cut down and restitched from an old pair of cut off shorts I had. I found the socks at a $2 shop and cut them down, so I got to cheat there too.

The article centred around the fact that he's paying so much for health insurance for his family, it reminds him that it's easier paying for a crack addiction than being healthy, and that when you're a crack addict, you don't give a fuck about health...

ADIDAS TOUR INTRO SPREAD FROM THE JOURNAL #17

I just had to do something fun for this issue and the opener for the Adidas tour was just screaming for a giant shoe.

I made the skeleton of the shoe from construction card and covered it with white denim, followed by a lick of paint. I wanted the bodies to look really naive so made them purely from aluminium foil, painted them and stuck prints of the riders heads up top. The background is more card and some painted MDF, and the clouds are made from some stuff we found in Pete Daly's studio when we were shooting it.

We shot it all in three pieces seperately, the shoe and riders, the buildings and ground, and the sky. This way we could avoid a complex set up, and simply bring everything together in Photoshop. And I can save space storing it, all of this stuff is starting to fill my house...

BAKER/DUSTIN DOLLIN "BOTTLE" GRAPHIC

I did this one entirely in Illustrator for Dusty, so there are no sketches or making of shots to accompany it.

I was inspired by these bar mats in pubs over here in Australia with glistening bottles on them, and after a million beers they reminded me of the Gene Wilder quote from the Mel Brooks movie Blazing Saddles:

"Well, it got so that every piss-ant prairie punk who thought he could shoot a gun would ride into town to try out the Waco Kid. I must have killed more men than Cecil B. DeMille. It got pretty gritty. I started to hear the word "draw" in my sleep. Then one day, I was just walking down the street when I heard a voice behind me say, "Reach for it, mister!" I spun around... and there I was, face-to-face with a six-year old kid. Well, I just threw my guns down and walked away. Little bastard shot me in the ass. So I limped to the nearest saloon, crawled inside a whiskey bottle, and I've been there ever since. "

He might not be in a whiskey bottle, but the sentiment remains...

It had been a while since I had done something this complex in Illustrator and I feel pretty happy with the way it came out.

Dustin was the most stoked that I got his tattoos in there for him. The board should be out in early October.

Jesus - I had fun doing this one! We had spoken since the magazine's inception about doing a comic to accompany the photos in an interview. We actually had totally different styles in mind, but they never really fit any of the interviewees - until Pat Dandy came along...

I've always loved Sergio Aragones' art, I grew up with his doodlings as a kid reading Mad magazine. It was a lot of fun learning to draw (although obviously not as well) in his style, and once I had done about an hour of random test drawings, I really ripped through the comic.

I laugh every time I see this stuff. I especially like the way Lizard King somehow snuck out of my subconscious onto the opening page! Check out the guy in the green smock and you'll know what I mean,

I just wish I had time to colour it all...

Volcano dress for ROMANCE WAS BORN

Here's a dress I made for my missus. She runs a fashion label called "Romance Was Born". They had a wild show for Australian Fashion Week at the Hogwarts looking building at Sydney Uni.

It's made from expander foam, with fibre optics in the laver flows strobing away, and LEDs in the collar to light up the face. I had to glue about a thousand Swarovski crystals onto the fuckin' thing...

I'd been looking at the etchings on bank notes and had this idea of using graduated colour in the lines of the etching to create the shading. This was a really tricky job, I didn't know whether I could pull it off, and struggled for about 10 hours before I knew I was on the right track.

I had a huge A1 print of it done for Dustin's 30th, and the detail printed beautifully. Very pleased with the final image.

BJORN JOHNSTON PORTRAIT FOR THE SKATEBOARDER'S JOURNAL #15

Here's the portrait I did of Bjorn for his interview in issue #15. It was made from 3mm construction card, glued together and painted. There are some pretty trick features under the skin to keep it standing, which it does manage to do on 2 feet with no assistance.

Bjorn has Norwegian blood, and everyone jokes about him having Viking heritage. I looked at abunch of Norse art and watched some documentaries on Vikings before I started this. When confronted with a landmass the Vikings would tow their boat overland - the boat was sacred to them so it went where they went. They would make a path with a series of logs, grease them with fish guts and haul the thing over what ever was in the way.

I had this idea of making a sculpture out of sharp lines, the painting it in textures that wrap around it to make the lines less harsh. A lot of the paint on it comes from various Aboriginal art I'd been looking at.

The Viking ship board is an old board, cut down with a ship made around it and finished in gold leaf - I've been doing a lot of gold leaf lately.

The portrait stands about 3 feet tall. Included below are a bunch of making-of shots too, some showing the mast between Bjorn's feet that I ended up cutting off.

Lastly, I might review this job and extend the trucks down with risers to accommodate large spoked wheels.

NEW COVER FOR THE SKATEBOARDER'S JOURNAL #13

Dane Burman ollies into the second bank at The Rocks in Sydney for the cover of our horror issue. A lot of people have thought about this, and those who tried it got worked - only Dane rolled away. You have to roll down a hill, turn right and ollie up a curb, then straight down the stairs into a downhill tunnel.

Be scared... this issue killed 3 computers, a lot of the skaters involved got injured, and we almost went insane making it. Andrew Peters photo.

RYAN WILSON INTERVIEW ISSUE #13

We shot this one in Pete Daly's studio in Bondi. For the opening spread we laid out a polished business card holder on eight livers, which under the lights really started to give off a pungent stench. The reflection of Ryan's face is out of the lens, not an ounce of Photoshop in this one.

After that shot we took Ryan out onto Bondi Rd and flicked fake blood at him from a range of about six inches, then took him inside and had him scream his lungs out until we got the right shot. The background images in the layouts were shot on the floor using a fake rolex, a knife and a white shirt with cufflinks. The we splattered the lot with blood and trimmings from the backs of the livers.

SHANE AZAR PORTRAIT FOR THE SKATEBOARDER'S JOURNAL #13

I decided to go with muppets after having dinner with Azar and looking at his muppet like hair. I made life size puppets out of high density foam, wool and fabric. The eyes came from ebay. I found some making-of shots, and have put them below the portrait.

The title was made out of melted wax and scanned.

Shot in Pete Daley's studio in Bondi, the same night as the Ryan Wilson "American Psycho" shoot in the same issue. Funny arse looking zombies, funny arse looking Shane.

What can I say about this cover... Glen E Friedman photo of Bobby Percy in 1978 (I think).

I tried to make it look like one of those 70s covers where they put the cover lines in really bad spots, with sometimes illegible colours.

A lot of people thought it was Nathan Jackson in the photo, which kinda makes sense.

Probably our most hated-on cover.

"FANOUT" ILLUSTRATION FOR THE SKATEBOARDER'S JOURNAL #12

This was for an article about the 1989 Ramp Riot in Prahran, Melbourne. All of the biggest names of the time were on tour around the country, guys like Christian Hosoi, Tony Hawk, Jason Jessee Mike McGill and Lee Ralph came to town to a true rock star reception. Kids just lost their shit in true 80s fashion, and some lives were changed forever.

We had Steve Gourlay shoot this Goldfinger tribute cover.

We had our friend Vivian model for us and projected the image onto her. This was a super hard shoot to do, Viv had to strike the pose, then we shut the lights off for the projection, so she had to hold the pose in the dark for the long exposure. I was a tough one and we celebrated with many fine ales

It was colour printed onto silver stock to make it extra gold...

THE SKATEBOARDER' S JOURNAL #10

I made a bronze zeppelin from a model of a twin engined German fighter, a vinegar bottle and an upside-down plastic submarine, mated them all together with modelling clay and used pieces of brass piping to make the periscope. It's probably too hard to see but there are losts of brass bits from model trains in there too.

The background is a mix of painted image and photography.

To finish it off I housed a bunch of the skaters from the skate vid Skylarking to make the opener to the making-of article.

POSTER FOR THE SKATEBOARDER'S JOURNAL #10

I did this poster to celebrate the 10th issue of our mag. It shows all of the previous 9 issues devouring (and destroying) a city. I did this during the time of the Catholic Youth Week shit in Sydney, so I incorporated them in the poster, being blasted away - how appropriate.

This was a triple gatefold insert in the mag - a monstrous job to draw. I've added some magnified images too to show some of the detail I could get into the whole thing.
